Malangi: A day in the life of a bark painter 1991

Based on the life, career and achievements of renowned bark painter and community leader Dr David Malangi, this 30-minute film by Michael Riley was shot entirely in the subject’s home in Arnhem Land and in Malangi’s own language, Manharrŋu. Subtitled by John Weluk, one of Malangi’s sons, it was the last 35-mm film to be shot by the ABC Television before converting to video. In Malangi, the bark painter’s family is seen hunting and playing at the waterhole; Malangi shows important traditional sites in his home country; and he talks about his place in history and expresses his concern for the continuation of his culture and family.
