Mission 1990

Exhibited at The art of place: 4th National Indigenous Heritage Art Award 1998 at Australian Heritage Commission, Old Parliament House, Canberra, Mission is a stand-alone work, combining three distinct images in one photographic work, like the later triptych Spirit clouds 1997. Mission depicts Michael Riley’s traditional country and can be read as contemplation on mission-imposed religion, where the triptych references the Holy Trinity. By representing country as earth, water and air, Riley’s message is also elemental, and rooted in something other than religion, adding another layer to the work’s meaning. In both subject and style, Mission preludes the 1998 photographic series flyblown and the film Empire 1997.
